Jullio 1950 Fulica americana 583 st. 10 Honey Lake Refuge, 4000 ft., Lassen Co., Calif. Watched a big flock of coots one one of the ponds today. About 1/2 of the birds present were very immature birds, still with mottled bills. No signs of pugacity or territorial behavior were seen. Dec 31 same locality - Coots living on the "Fish Pond" along south of the headquarters area are paired and on territory. Although there was quite a bit of ice it didn't seem to disturb them. 1951 Feb. 11 same locality - Pairing activity is becoming progressively more evident. The larger fowty flocks are becoming increasingly smaller and more and more coots are giving evidence of territorid activity. Especially on the Pomo Mule Deer Pond territory areas seem to be shaping up. On the Fish Pond there has been a continuous existence afterterritor fights throughout the winter. This may also have been true elsewhere, as on the Flemssing Reservoir, but less readily observed On Friday, Feb. 9 I heard chowing cackling from the Fish Pond but I did not determine the circumstances surrounding this
