Fulica americana 582 pt.10 Lake Temescal, 420 ft., Alameda Co., Calif. were soon intercepted by 2 curious but non aggressive coots. These three remained close together. Once the E pair, as compared by their lying swim out to attack the 3 newcomers + 2 flock birds when they ventured in to about <16. pt 12 Lake Merritt, Oakland, Alameda C., Calif.- There are quite a few coots here today. There are about /6, mostly with For SS shields though one or two have S shields. All I have been At least 3 yellow legged adults were seen. Two forming one apparently highly territorial pair. All three with swollen shields. -Lake Temescal, 420 ft., Alameda Co., Calif. 2 newly tagged Y-B+G-\seen near dam along with 3 non-tagged birds. All resident pairs apparently on territory. SE lying still in home area but other young are acting as flock birds. E young with a well developed halo, light fronted Sept13 Jewel Lake, 510 ft., Contra Costa C., Calif. Although there are many tracks in the pond weed, I was unable to see any coots during the hour I watched the lake. They are probably molting and hence keeping themselves hidden in the cat-tails. A dead and a live Mallard were seen and a Virginia Rail heard.
