the vacuoles all collapsed. Densely fibrous, nuclei closely packed. Bird 81 - Ovary seems to be normally active. Dermis heavily vacuolated in its deepest portion, but becomes less so towards the outer edge, with groups of vacuoles scattered hither and yonder. That seems to be the difference between the swollen and flat shield, the presence or absence of the vacuoles. The swollen shield is spongy, the flat shield dense fibrous and hard. Bird 82 - Ovary [illegible] normally active, a number of unrecognized cells present. Shield swollen, but down from former size. Dense dermis layer about 0.35 mm thick, spongy portion 1.98 mm thick. Spongy layer continues down under white layer - callus forms feather edge over white of bill. Malpighian layer thinner under white layer, also the basal cells under white portion are without vacuoles. At anterior part of shield portion no spongy layer present. White portion does not take stain, nor does the callus. Bird 83 - dense c.t. layer [0.19] mm thick, spongy layer about 2.04 mm thick. Bird 84 - dense ct layer 0.680mm, spongy layer 2.125 mm thick.
