579 is composed of dense fibrous connective tissue. It is well supplied with large blood vessels and towards the posterior end of the shield bundles of smooth muscle become frequent. The subcutaneous layer is in excess of 3.23 mm thick. It is composed of a cartilaginous mass, many nucleated [illegible] large fibers, supposedly elastic, scattered around, and many smaller strands of fibers scattered throughout. Seems to be no orderly arrangement to this layer. Some bundles of smooth muscle appear here and there. It must be this layer that gives the yellowish tinge apparent on the shields of some birds. Checking the section anterior and posterior to the callus, two things are noted. First, the stratum corneum is not so sharply defined. In fact nuclei are apparent in cells that have been completely flattened, in contrast to the callus. Also, the small basal vacuolated cells are not present as under the callus. The skin lateral to the shield has a Malpighian layer about 0.016 mm thick. Bird 80- No sperm or spermatial debris but meiosis frequent, lots of active gonial & 1st cyte cells. Callus 0.049mm thick, Malpighian layer 0.085mm, dermis 1.7 mm, subcutaneous layer about 0.33 mm.-very dense and compact.
