July 1950 Fulica americana 557 July 15 Lake Temescal, 42ft., Alameda Co., Calif. - the time I was at the nest. No sound from E ♀ as ymg. J6.7 is not in as good shape as it might be. The E ymg has its white tail coverts and is further along than one SW brood bird! 1 SW ymg still has the halo and another seems to not yet have gotten the halo. All the SW young have the white tail coverts. The E was with the ymg, the ♀ staying in close to the cat tails. July 18 Same Locality - 8 eggs in nest & 7.17- mone pipped; tho #1 should pip today and #2 tomorrow if they are going to hatch. The nest is lined with Pota- mogelon today and both parents were noably churning and swanning - 10:40 The ♀ was on the nest. 4 eggs in nest 7/16.2- both parents nearly swanming and churning. Also 1 medium gray young, both E ymg are solid medium- gray, both giving a "pueep" call, not the "pzrap" note of alarm. Nest #3.10 much in use, & 23.8 probably not in use but in good repair. What must be the platform for tho 2nd S&Y clutch has appeared at H-7.23. It is quite new, maybe a day old. Both birds nearly pulping and poonking about it. It is composed mostly of this years dead yellow growth, and was started on a 1½ inch floating pole. It is typical in all respects, having an overall diameter of about 13", an effective width 16".
