Julio 1950 Fulica americana 556 July 13 Lake Taroocopl, 42 alt. Alameda Co., Calif. - 11:23 p.m. SE ♂ on nest K7.17 - he went off as I came in but didn't go more than about 2 feet away. The E ♀ was on 4 eggs in nest P16.2. The P15 structure was warm tho I didn't see a bird on it. A ♀ Ruddy may have come off it. The E ♂ "pulqued" at me several times as he swam just out of the cattails. Checking ♀ 23.10 & found 2 sprays tho but couldn't tell if that was there - not - she didn't defend if she was. July 15 same locality - At 6:45 SE ♂ on nest, SE ♀ feeding at J8 with lynx. This one SE yrng is now in the light gray leach, lighter gray front stage. Size of eggs in nest K7.17 - in mm. 1-35.5 x 51.0 2-35.4 x 50.8 3-35.0 x 49.8 4-34.6 x 50.6 5-34.2 x 51.9 6-34.7 x 49.4 mm 7-34.4 x 50.6 8-34.6 x 50.0 Both parents seemed to be extremely excited about the whole affair. The ♂ especially chrood continuously for about 20 seconds when I first got to the nest. The ♀ quickly came over to join him. I noticed that the ♂ growl is somewhat higher pitched than that of the female. The M pair are together but seem contented to roage at K17.
