Fulica americana July 11 Lake Tamescal, 420 ft. Alameda Co., Calif. down from the surrounding narrow-leaved plants. There is much dead stuff in it however, some broad-leaved dead cat-tails. The structure at P16,17 is completely defunct. Both parents and young are nearby, the adults churning and generally concerned about my presence here! A & F Buddy also seems to be interested. Three eggs in nest P16.2 may be the reason for their concern. The P16.4 structure must have been the copulatory platform for this clutch. At 10:05 the E ♀ was incubating. D?3.8 non-functional, D?3.10 in good repair but does not appear to be in use. The D?2 nest does not appear to be in use either (the both parents and adults young came down to talk about my walking out to it). These two young, the closely accompanying their parents, are not making displays. I think there is a difference in their & voices but I am not certain. The oldest is just begining to show white tail coverts, the younger still has the rounded stern. Not counting D? there are apparently 12 adult Coots here today - 4 pairs and 4 flochs mids. W13E is still tagged, so are the E ?5E & ??. Platform L?4.3 not in use. Nest J6.7 in use and good repair. I6.18 is still in use but is getting badly beaten down. It is not under repair. The SW♀ is not to far away, "booning". I6.1
