Felica Americana 550 July 8 Jewell Lake, 2/3pt. Contra Costa Co., Calif.- along the NW cove. 8:57- The adult by the NW cove came out, one immature bogged and was given an insect the adult had in its bill, but a moment later it was pecked. Two other immatures close by noisily departed when the adult appeared. A lot of the insects this adult is carrying appear to be freshly emerged dragon- and damselflies. Apparently the & was on the nest or the O' off. Found egg 7 hatched, +2.6 +8 unhipped, +8 being the very long & narrow egg, smells a little strong. One yng was seen in the water nearby. Photographed narrow- & broad-leaved cat-tails in B/W & Color to show differences. uly 10 same locality - 1:10 p.m. watching 3 immatures feeding in the GHT area, they are staying in close to the cat tails, apparently so that they can readily escape if attacked. They are behaving much as the immatures did last year after the 2nd brood was hatched. All three of these birds are getting their dark plumage. One still has some of the light gray on the head but the other two are almost entirely in their dark gray plumage. They're all busy feeding by diving and tipping for pond weed. 1:20- can't tell whether a bird is brooding H17.2 or not. A yng is in the water among the cat tails nearby and one parent is at 1:27- moving to the cove.
