Fulica americana 537 July 4 Lake Temescal, 450 ft., Alameda Co., Calif.- 12:01 a.m. - 7 eggs in nest K7.17-the unmarked ♂ on the nest incubating. I immatures on nest P16.2-the E♂ was in the cat-tails just N and the ♀ apparently at P16.17. Nest Q22 still in good repair, the coop placed in Q23.10 has been trodden upon but had no material added on top of it. 12:25 q.m. ♂ quit back on K7.17. It is the male. Nest J6.7 warm, J7.21 warm from Nidal brood, J6.1 and J6.18 curiously wet but not warm, H7.24 warm. I wonder if the SW pair have a new egg nest some- where. 12:40 - SE♂ on nest K7.17 12:55 a.m. ♂ still on nest, still 7 eggs. 12:59 no bird back on nest yet. 1:02 still no bird on nest. 1:10 a.m., the ♀ is back on the nest. 1:15-1:30 a.m I walked the W side of the lake - found 2 Coots at F17 and one at D29 - all three moved across the lake by protracted dives. 1:35 - SE♂ on K7.17. at 1:40 no min on P16.2, saw water newly, apparently with ♀ present, E♂ in his usual spot, about P17.19. About 1 a.m. one of the SW yng was whewing a lot, sound as if it was being mauled, the peeping was heard accompanied by low tones of an ♂ adult-perhaps the SE yng were out of home range. The fussing must have lasted for about 15 minutes. 1:55 chased the ♀ off again still 7 eggs he churned as he moved out into the cat-tails. I chased
