Fulica americana 503 June 18 Jewel Lake, 5/10 ft., Contra Costa Co., Calif. 3 yng seen on S pool at 1:10 p.m. but 1:15 p.m. 4 yng present - all in medium gray immature plumage. Two youngest still have distinct preocular spot; one has a faint one, all have well developed tails and under coverts. Dive been here for 20 minutes now and still no adults seen. A moment ago something tried to catch a Red-wing as it hovered low over the water after an insect. Nest N26.18 still in good shape and in use. Nest N25.24 - no eggs but still in use. Platform P25.21 - a few paths around but otherwise little sign of use. Nest P25.7 - still present but not utilized. What may be a new nest or platform is at H21.2. It is a loose pile of both green and dead cat-tail leaves. I suspect it is a platform and that a nest is nearby. The nest with 8 eggs (marked 1-8) is at H17.2. Eggs warm. Nest largely of dead broad-leaved cat-tail, some green from the surrounding narrow- leaved worked in. No sign of adults. Nest is about 3 feet in from open water, not much ramp but what there is faces E. Relatedly the page before had three uncertain "pools" from near H15. June 19 same locality - 7:45 a.m. - flushed off nest H17.2 - still 8 eggs, all warm. No moved out into the open part of the lake
