GULLION 950 Fulica americana 492 me12 Lake Temescal, 420 ft., Alameda Co., Calif. - near the end of a big hole somebody opened in the cat-tails over the weekend and doesn't look much used today. Brood nest at J7.21 is in good shape and looks much used. There birds may also be using the old Ruddy Duck nest at J6.16, at least there is a lot of fecal matter on it which looks like Cast feces. The I6.1 nest is still in use. Both parents were "pooing" and "puhking" as I waded in their area. The nest at I6.18 is much the heaviest used, and is very well built up and care for. I am interested to see how well the well-woven nest of the Ruddy Duck without a ramp holds up despite evident heavy use. It is being entered and left from the same [illegible] position which helps in this matter, but while a Cast nest requires constant constructive work, this Ruddy nest has had nothing basically changed since it was built about May 9. 10 a.m. - A SW bird just routed a couple of birds from G17 north. The brood nest at P16.2 is really built up, the nest at P16.17 is less well attended to. Both E birds voiced while I was in the P16 area and then accompanied me to O22 as I moved up there. Watched the E one feeding vigorously on a partly peeled floating orange.
