Fulica americana 483 tue 7 Middle Chain Lake, Golden Gate Park, SF Co., Calif. but are fairly good sized. There are also several broods of Mallards on the lake and at least 3 Pied billed Grebes which may mean a brood. It's an old one if it is - it is. Watched a Coot trying to charge these Grebes. The adult dived when the pressure was high but the young just sank into the water away and went around in circles frustrating the Coot. Watched the brood of four being fed by both parents, also doing a little feeding on their own. They look something like this: one of these young still has a narrow streak of black just penetrating into the white on the forehead. There seem to be two in the youngest brood, and there are at least two of the oldest brood, also at least 2 young Pied-billed Grebes. One of the parents of this youngest brood does is giving them a bad time, at least one of them. This lake has Iris, Scirpus and Pampas Grass as possible nesting cover. One nest, apparently the one this youngest brood belongs to, is in Iris. One of the young is standing on the damp that now - 9:15 a.m. There must be about 3 pairs of Coots on this lake.
