Fulica americana June 5 Jewel Lake, 510 ft., Contra Costa Co. Calif. wood nest at N 26. 18. The old egg nest at N 25. 19 is completely under water now. The old display platform at B/4. 5 is still extant and has fresh feces on it, probably a preening or night roosting place Lake Temescal, 420 ft., Alameda Co. Calif. At 4 p. m. I watched the E ♂ trying to drive a ♀ Ruddy Duck out of the area. P20. Every time he charged the Ruddy ducked under and stayed under so long that the E♂ would lose interest and start to move away. Then the duck would surface right where she dived from and the E♂ would attack again only to have the duck dive. This was repeated 3 times before the E♂ decided it was a bad job and left for going to G21 to feed 1 black bodied flyng while the ♀ feeds the other. About 4:06 p. m. the SE(♂?) chased an M bird to S/4. The latter dived there, but not before the SE bird got a bill full of feathers. When the M bird surfaced, at about 1/6, it churned and then settled down to preen. Noticed one of the M birds (♂?) slinking out of the SE area with its body and neck depressed but its head up, in a charge except to the elevated land. At the same time the a SE bird was attacking the other M bird
