Jun 5 Jewel Lake, 510 ft., Contra Costa Co., Calif.- At least 3 yng seen about 9:15-9:35 this morning feeding around the 5 pool. There may be 3 adults on the lake, I am not sure. 9:32 a ♀ is feeding by the inlet at H4. Noticed once that the feathers on the back and rump of one yng are about the color of an adult ♀ Red-wing. otherwise a rusty-brown. These young seem to be feeding almost entirely by themselves and their activities are generally independent of the adults. However, as noted yesterday, they respond immediately to the warning calls of their parents. At 9:45 the ♀ was feeding the 2 youngest birds at F10, an older bird was crossing to D11, another was at F9 and a 5th moved from G8 to H4. A few minutes later I was able to get another count of 5, 2 standing on sticks at H11, preening, 1 with the ♂ at F9, 2 feeding near the ♀ at H5.
