Fulica americana 476 June 4 Jewel Lake, 5/0 ft. Contra Costa Co., Calif.- As I had suspected earlier, there are 5 yrg on the lake, 100% survival of hatched eggs. 3 were at EF9, 1 at D6 when a 5th, smaller bird appeared momentarily at IT. A moment later some screaming high school girls came by scaring the lot into cover. Found a new platform at about P25.21, composed largely of green material, some feathers. Found a nest w/4 warm eggs at N 25.24, within a foot if not on exactly the same location as the second nest last year. The eggs marked. The F was in the core, indicating some concern but not a whole lot. The brood nest at N 26.18 is settling some but still in use with some green material recently having been added to it. The new- egg nest has no ramp on it yet, is not really lined and generally looks unfinished. - Univ. Calif. Campus, Alameda Co., Calif.- Put 20 gunny sacks of Polanogeton into the pond from Jewel Lake. These birds seem unfamiliar with the stuff, several of them tried a little bit, but they only nibbled. A couple went to lettuce after trying the pondweed. I notice that all the lettuce put out yesterday is gone and the carrot tops hardly touched either-in w-
