May 27 Lake Temescal, 420 ft., Alameda Co., Calif. No 3 male is not tagged but I am not sure whether it is SC or not. As several young fishermen worked N along the banks these three birds moved out to the middle of the lake and started S, 2 more or less together going towards H24, the other alone over at H26. As I had observed earlier these birds do not bob their heads in unison with their feet while swimming; it is a matter of the head being held steady and the body oscillating under it. In foraging the head is bobbed, but again not necessarily in unison with the feet. The head bobbing maintains a rather constant pace, regardless of how fast or slow the feet moves. Occasionally when there is a great deal of floating food, as bread or cracker crumbs etc., they will accelerate the rate of head bobbing, but again this is not correlated with an increased stroking of the feet. I know of six five birds definitely put on the lake that is scared birds, the UNM from the Nend was probably W3E, also placed here, and B which I haven't seen for several days would make seven. So no non-territorial birds are present that have movable wings. All the non-territorial birds on the lake are here because they can't leave, they have one wing clipped. Probably the Warrea
