May 26 Lake Temescal, 450 ft, Alameda Co., Calif. At K7, M♀ swam out of cat-tails with wings arched as I approached, when she was at K8. 9 the SE ♂ was at K7.3, patrolling (against whom?). There was a shift of incubating birds about 9:50 am. cause d 9:56 the SE♀ is on the nest. At K7 the SE♂ chased the M♀ around in a few circles, she cackling and braking. 7 eggs in nest J6.5, none peeped, can't figure what wrong bee. P dry today, Male churned in close a couple of times, but no persistent defense. Nest I6.1 is still being used and much building as a brood nest. Egg #8 was found floating in the water just off the end of the ramp. The dead young on the ramp is pretty nearly covered by cat-tail stiff. Opening the shell of this egg I found the young fully developed. Apparently cuped about 7 or 8 yrs ago are hatched the stimulus to care for the young overcomes the stimulus to incubate. So far no more than 8 eggs have been hatched in any nest, regardless of clutch size, but when less than 8 eggs are in the nest the hatch is generally 100%. The structure at K7.17 is built up from May 24, and apparently in use as a display platform not a nest. The other two structures seem to be deteriorating.
