The M♀ tried to brace for him, but he responded by grabbing M ♂, holding him under water for about 15 seconds and viciously pecking him. M♀ tried to come to the aid of her mate, but SE ♂ released his grip on M ♂, and despite her cackling, attacked her, getting in at least two vicious jabs, after which she quit cackling and swam to escape. He came back thru the channel, M ♂ escaped under water to J13 and M♀ went out W of the island. 9:17 a.m. SE ♂ attacked and quickly routed a ♂ Mallard at L4. The two M birds, having some difficulties with the SE birds, are regaining interest in the old M area. SE ♂ is still [illegible] some- what tolerant of the M♀, 9:25 - he allowed her to approach to within about 20 feet of him in the channel [illegible] without him showing any antagonism. 9:41 SE ♀ came off the nest while SE ♂ was feeding at L6.9, she came towards him he turned and met her, and they moved off in the usual chase: to L4, where they fed together a moment, then the ♂ went to the nest, being settled by 9:43 a.m. 9:55 a.m. SE ♀ took a piece of cat-tail from K7 to the nest; SE ♂ took it, put it on
