Fulica americana 441 May 20 Lake Tamescal, 420 ft.; Alameda Co., Calif. 5:32 a.m. SE♂ is on the trees along the W side of the lake. 5:36 a.m. the attitude of SE♂ towards MF is becoming increasingly aggressive, and I suppose she will soon be driven from this area. In this last incident her cackling and brace was barely able to stave off a full scale assault. The SE♂ started to display a couple of times, and actually got into a charge once. The charge and paried display have nothing to do with courtships. 5:50 a.m. SE♀ still on nest. Apparently she not only got stuck with the males night shift, but also has to sit her normal early morning one. 5:53-SE♂ chasing MF again, this time in the channel, and not with amorous intentions. 5:58 am. E birds at N12, no sign of young. They moved N ahead of me as I moved to their core area. No young heard or seen but they sure kicked up a fuss when I got too close to the water at P23-24-25. 6:08 I am moving to F20 from L6 to watch the E pair & ymq. At 6:10 SE♀ still on nest. Arrived F20 about 6:15 but it was 6:22 before I finally was able to locate E♂ w/1 ymq at P23. 6:26-E♂ diving & feeding along at Q24. Saw O playing on the lawn at the S end of the lake about 5:40 a.m., SE♂ was at L2.
