Junior 49 June 23 Jewel Lake, Hidden Park, Contra Costa, Calif. open water there. She was feeding by diving, three dives were timed: 10½, 11, r 11 seconds. She did not bring the food to the surface. At about 8:50 the S ♂ was heard near D 12 - and a moment later he- was in sight - thus no bird is on the nest (deserted?). At 9:05 a.m. the two males on the lake clashed at H/3.7. Sounded as they were lashing at each other but I did not actually see the conflict - I saw it just as it was broken off. There was no breaking off or separation procedure other than preening. The S ♀ spattered from F5 to F8 in the haste to join her mate, but since the struggle quickly ended she did not go beyond G 11. The next platform at N 26.14 is apparently not under construction, at least no bird has been on it since the 21st. The old egg nest of the north pair seems to be in use still - today it had feathers on it that were not there before. The new S nest contained six cold eggs today- it has been deserted - the clearing was apparently too much for them. At 9:50 a.m. a bird crowed at B18- immediately the south ♀ "pooned" and the N ♂ "putked". I couldn't see the proceedings immediately after the crow but a moment later I was in the cat-trails and I could see that the crowing bird was alone except for 1 young nearby,
