llion 349 June 21 Jewel Lake, Trident Park, Contra Costa Co. Calif. - Fulica americana -43- gangway leads out E side, turns sharply to go to open water. Gang- way of foot long broad leaves - some 2 leaves of green in nest, rest are all of battered (bitten?) narrow leaves. Seem to be quite a few feathers in this nest, not only around the eggs but also at deep layers. It is 11 in from rim of nest to water down gangway. From the rim above the gangway to the opposite side it is 12 inches. The water 1 in below the surface at the nest side was 72°F. At 4 p.m. I saw 12 young at once, six in the south area, six with the♀ in the north area - still think my count of 13 yesterday was good. This is the first time today I've been able to count more than 10 young surely. 4:10 p.m. - found what may be the start of another nest platform for the north pair at N26, 14. A little greenery in it, mostly dried cat-tails, water soaked, not over 1 inch high & about 8 inches across. I'm not sure it is fresh. The damwood nest of this pair is defunct.
