Eulicia Americana -39- June 20 Jewel Lake, Tilden Park, Contra Costa, Calif. grayish when seen in good light, their breasts a dirty light gray & their backs are darker. 2 of them have very dark patches on the forewants just above the water line. Two of the south brood are still very white on their front surfaces. The brood nest of the north pair (at O 25.19) is nearly gone, not being used and has nearly fallen apart, their egg nest tho still seems to be in place tho it is nearly sunken. A fresh green leaf as been laid across the top & other dry stuff laid on top of it recently. The brood nest along the dam was not visited. Three of the south brood studied more closely- one has some white under tail coverts and a dark breast etc., the other two are still quite white, showed no signs of white under tail coverts. One that I studied closely seemed to have a black base to its bill, with the distal portion more yellowish, also the cap of its head down around the eye was darker than the back of the head, neck or breast. Something else that is noticeable, the birds of the north brood & the dark one in the south brood now carry their tails free of the water, while the white fronted ones still swim with their tail on the water surface also a definite size difference.
