Fulica americana -37- June 20 Jewel Lake Contra Costa, Calif.- in full plumage, but the ♀ appears quite greyish. Only one bird [illegible] of the south brood seen so far. It gave the crowing call at position C14 about 12:15 p.m. One once, no cause or results seen. About 12:10 a red- tailed hawk was circling over the lake. Exposed coots (about 6? of them) did not try to find shelter but rather stayed put keeping one eye turned skyward. During the time the Buteo was overhead there was no sound from the birds on the lake.-at about 1:45 p.m. 10 young were seen, 6 in the area D+E-18+19., the other four in the south pond. Two [illegible] were in a distant paired display at C+D-17. One about C 17.23.-the other at D 17.18 -the one from C17 splattered a few feet towards the other, but they were never closer than about 15 feet, soon they gradually dropped out of the display and went on feeding. No sounds were heard during the process. At 4:15 p.m., while mapping the lake in the vicinity of the south brood nest the S♀ worked across the open water from F9 to near my position beside the nest. She churned about 8 times, and "poonked" between churns. The ♂ followed along about 20 feet behind, "pulking". They act as if they may be nesting again.
