Fulica Americana May 28 Jewel Lake, Contra Costa Co., Calif. including the throat chest & chin region; also the side of the neck and the cheeks are white. The bill is still reddish - the head has a hoary cast to it. They are mostly feeding themselves (at 5:20 the S male is cawing 3 times) in company with their parents, but occasionally one takes food from a parent. They look nearly as large as the female now, and sometimes when viewed from the back they are confused with the ♀. When directly facing me they look all white except for the bill which is reddish. The white is apparently only on that part of their chest region that is out of the water, for the breast of one standing out of the water breaks sharply to a light gray at the water line. Two of them are feeding on the edge of the open water along the dam. They are feeding like phalaropes, picking insects from the water surface. June 4 same locality - This morning at 8 p.m. I have been able to count 12 young coots on the lake. 7 in the area of the south brood and 5 with the north parents. One of the south brood birds looks pretty large for his nest mates, probably belongs to the north brood, but there seems to be no objection to its remaining
