W. GULLION 1950 Fulica americana 380 May 4 Roche Temescal, 420ft., Alameda Co., Calif. Earlier this evening one of the SE birds was at K6 while two Mallards were a few feet away and the tagged Drake was feeding at Q T6. The hen with all the young was at the E end of the island, but no indication of aggression could be seen. 6:40-the E♀ coming N, passing nest at O22 and continuing north to finally cut in along N side of cat-tails at P/Q 23. She passed within about 15 feet of a ♀ Luddy at Q 21 and missed a ♂ Mallard at Q 20. Now 6:43 she is feeding at Q 24, 6:50 pm- since about 6:45 w/PL and another bird have been in a huddle at L 16. 6:51 - the E♀ just went S to P/6. The tagged ♂ is on the nest facing W. 6:55 p.m. Coots are still feeding on the open water, but mostly near shore. w/PL at K19 is giving ♀ “poonks” as she moves slowly back and forth; 7:04 pm - now she is moving S to K17 and then back N. A ♀ “junk-runking” at L20 (the mid♀ on the nest apparently got off, started to swim away in response to that note, got just out of the cat-tails before turning back to the nest.) Checked P/6- a ♀ (E probably was there. The bird on the nest surely is the ♂. All have to be here early in the morning.
