W. GULLION 1950 Fulica americana 378 May 3 Jewel Lake, 570 ft., Contra Costa Co., Calif. - seen following the ♂ out into the middle of the lake as he is moving around in defense. The lone bird just gave his "cow-wah," and a moment later jingled a few feet sideways to avoid something in the water. Couldn't tell what. 6:05 p.m. heard 1 lying & saw two others. Now the lonesome ♂ at C13 is giving his "cow-wah" "cow-wah" note! (Calling for a mate?) May 4 Lake Temescal, 420 ft., Alameda Co., Calif.- At 5:45 a.m. the ♀ is on nest Q22 while the tagged ♂ feeds at Q24. I gave a couple of "pnhks" to get him to come into view. He came to the nest clump and patrolled it against me, staying in the cat-tails. At 6 a.m. a ♀ is incubating at J6.5. -6:06 p.m. a level is incubating at J6.5. 6:15 p.m. The E♂ is on nest Q22, the E♀ was down towards P16 but responded when I gave a couple of "pnhks" and swam up to the general vicinity of the nest, then on over to Q23. Now, 6:20 she is moving back S via P20. 6:21 E♀ splattered from P19 to N17 to attack two W? birds and to drive them out of her area. She particularly assaulted the marked bird of the W pair, even diving behind him for underwater chase. One of the ♀♂ cachled but I couldn't be sure which, thinks it was the WF.
