1958 Fulica americana 377 May 3 Jewel Lake, 5/0 ft., Contra Costa Co., Calif. - At 5:25 p.m. a lone bird swimming in the S pond with its neck outstretched, or more properly, up-stretched and alert. This bird moved out of sight. A moment later a series of "pukks" came out of the S end and continued for about 2 minutes, once being answered by a "cowah" from near D6. The "pukks" seemed to be from G with 3. 5:34 a neck craning bird coming out from D6 crossed to F9. Working the cat-tails at the S end I was able to flush only one bird out, a ♂, and he showed no signs of possession; that is he splatted and flew away when he saw me in the cat-tails. Not at all the behavior of a nesting or even territorial bird. 5:50—a bird over near C12 giving a "cow-ah" note several times. Then as the two ♂ birds began puking and poohing in defense, he came out of the cat-tails and moved to H18 and on down to K25 where he met the charging ♀. He started to dabble and pace, but the male quickly splatted out to drive him to G22. As the ♂ returned this the S♂ came to J22 and poked around. Once even gave the same defense note being given by the ♂. Eggs #2 & #4 in nest H25.19. Neither as very warm nor are either pipped. I doubt if they hatch. No young heard, but one
