W. GULLION 1950 Fulica americana 376 May 2 Lake Temescal, 420 ft., Alameda Co., Calif. She's out of it. 7:08 - dim left. May 3 Same locality. At 5:40 a.m. A bird incubating nest J6.5. At 5:45 a.m. the F is on nest Q22.13 while the M is feeding at Q24, and puking as the F Mallard and her brood feed in the Q23 area. The Mallards moving S passed thru the nest clump while the E M watched from Q23.15. The F on the nest craned her neck to watch the passing brood, but made no aggressive moves against them or even any notes. I assume from her presence on the nest now that she spent the night on it, and took over from the male a few minutes after I left last evening. 5:50 the Mallard and her brood of 10 just came back thru the area and are now feeding at R23 unmoletsted. 5:52 - the E M is in the nest clump just off the end of the ramp. The F is sitting tight so no replacement yet. 2 F Rudies were sitting in the open water about 10 feet from the E M. They were not threatened, then they moved to Q23.12, still the M stayed in the nest clump and still the F sits tight. He seems to no need to do go now. He is eating more decaying cat-tail material as he works thru the E side of the nest clump. I suspect he is "patrolling" against me but is shy about getting out in the open at Q23.15 as he need to do 6 a.m.
