Fulica Americana 356 Apr 28 Lake Teyescal, 420 ft., Alameda Co., Calif. Something. 5:09 a hon mallard w/10 young came working by the nest clump. The ♂ had his head erect but seemed to be taking no special note of their presence. Some of the ducklings were within 3 or 4 feet of the nest. The E♂ gave no note nor did the ♀ brown indicate any interest in the Mallard brood passing close to the nest. The E♀ has been at Ⓐ25-26 all the while, so the bird heard & seen was an intruder. At 5:27 the E♀ chased a pair of Mallards a few feet at Ⓐ25. The E♀ just “poonked” at Por Ⓐ23 while the Mallard brood is at Ⓐ25 moving N, the hon leading. The sun is right into my eyes across P23, so I can’t see much out there. 5:35 p.m. The Mallard brood is feeding along the ledge of the cat-tail at PO Ⓐ23 while the E♀ is at Ⓐ23, 12 or 13. She “poonked” three times, got no response from the ducklings, and pressed the matter no further. 5:40 p.m. The Mallard brood went on south, apparently without incuring any trouble during the 30 minutes they were in the general nesting area. During this same time the ♀ cat attached a pair of adult Mallards, and must have passed the brood while doing so. 5:44 p.m. some disagreement seems to be present
