Fulica americana -31- May 21 Jewel Lake, Tiller Park, Contra Costa Calif. The S brood with 6 young came into area H1D, where the two parents were busily feeding their loosely knit flock. These young still give the 'whew' don't dive or tip, still have red bills and black throat & chest areas. The young of the north brood have lost the black throat and chest and now have a shiny white one, very conspicuous, they still give the 'whews' and their bills are still all red. The parent birds all seem to be quiet, and very busy. At 3:45 p.m. the north brood and parents were in E26, where most of the brood was diving, tho the young seems to have some difficulty diving, having to jump out at the water to get down, one of them stayed under-water for about 15 seconds. Generally they go down and pop right back up. - At 4:20 p.m. I saw the north parents with six young, all white throated and about the same size. 5 were with the ♀ at K24 and one with the ♂ at H24. May 28 Same locality - Arrived at the lake at 7:45 a.m. All 4 adults present, and 5 young seen in both broods. At 8:05 a.m. the two males were in paired display at F14.
