Fulica americana 35) Apr 28 Lake Tomsacal, 400 ft, Alameda Co. Calif. 3 eggs still in nest P6.S., other egg had rolled out of the nest and was cracked lengthwise. It was floating in the water nearby, rotten. One of the eggs is still warm in the nest, but another is quite cool; in fact all three are too cool to be under further incubation. Eggs #3, 4 & 5 still in nest. Flies are on them. No sign of young, but both parents in the area, displaying. The ♂ especially. At 3 p.m. when I approached nest Q22.13, the ♀ was incubating. As I walked N along the road the ♂ came along roadside to me, "swarming". He was immediately in there, on the defense when I started out to the nest. The ♀ stayed on the nest until I was almost to it, then she came off towards me. As I reached for the nest she struck at me, touching my outstretched hand, then backed off, away from me with a great deal of churning and growling. The ♂ was behaving in the same manner. I pulled a few cat tails from in front of the nest to facilitate observation. Now 3:14 p.m. A bird is settled back on the nest. About 3:10 the ♂ chased the ♀ to Q23.13 giving a series of high pitched "kuk, kuk, kuk" notes. The bird still sitting on the nest is facing N. Now the other bird is taking off S.
