GULLION 950 Fulica Americana 323 Apr. 22 Jewel Lake, 51/2 ft., Contra Costa Co., Calif. at G-2 for awhile but is now gone. What looks very much like a display platform at C 13. 11. It is almost identical to the one photographed at Lake Temescal (B 23. 13). It is composed of a bunch of broken up cat-tail leaves on some coarse floating stater. Some green stuff worked in but not much some fecal matter on the edge of it. If this S pair has a nest, and I believe they do, it must be the the early stages of development or incubation since they give no sign of defense or even interest in any area. I checked F-9, also A B C 12 to 17, F+6 3+4, without getting a rise out of either bird. Lake Temescal, 420 ft., Alameda Co., Calif. - 5 eggs in nest I 6. 1. ♀ ready poorting and chirning (8:36 a.m.). Some sort of an elaborate platform at I 6. 5. Not a nest, but looks like a display platform. Probably has been here for several days, unnoticed. SE ♂ was quibbling at me while I am examining this platform. A new nest at J 7. 21, about 5 feet from the platform Well formed cup etc and ramp facing to W. ♀ on nest with one upq. Egg #1 & 7 hushen, both rotten. ♂ng left nest. Got into nest ♀ 22. 13, found 4 marked 7 eggs. Both birds were in very close in defense of the nest. ♂ & ♀ both on territory,
