Fulica americana -27- May 9 El Cerrito, Contra Costa Co., Calif. - a single bird seating in the marsh grass at the mouth of @ Cerrito Creek at high tide 7 p.m. May 14 Jewel Lake, Tilden Park, Contra Costa Co., Calif.- About 7:45 I observed one bird feeding a small chick near L14 - the adult was diving and bringing food up. A moment later another adult with 1 chick was seen near M25 - a moment later being joined by another chick. A few moments later 5 chicks of this brood were seen together. 3 noticeably larger and darker ones were feeding on @ surface material unaccompanied while 2 smaller and yellower birds were being fed eat-tail stem and something else from under the water. About 8 a.m. the male from the N pair moved out from N26 to L25, tipping for a filamentous substance just below the surface - then his head went up and @ he moved south in a direct line - rapidly - As he moved along he more and more assumed a charging position and at about F17 started splattering, finally stopping near G/13. In the meantime the 5 pair with 6 young, were diving and feeding in the open water near E/11.
