I. GULLION 950 Apr 17 Lake Tamescal, 420 ft., Alameda Co., Calif. On arrival, at 1:41 p.m., a bird was sitting tight on nest J6.5. E pair in copulation at 1:55 p.m. at G23.9. One bird was making a low, clear "put- put- put," or similar note as the ♂ wás mounting. One bird jumping for leaves of weeping willow at G24. That bird moved to D26 to feed the same way there. On the heat of the day, as it is now at 2:05 p.m. most of the coots are in shaded areas. Mostly feeding some, but a few just sitting and preening. At 2:10 ♂ pursuit, tho not active, as two birds moving from E13 to F17 caused a bird at F16 to move to F20. The trailing ♀ poonked at least three times but the leading ♂ remained silent. G/R and an unmarked bird seem to be occupying the M area today. No UNM bird gives the ♀ "poonk". G/R gives the ♂ call. I haven't seen them actually billing, but they seem to be amiable enough and once UNM "poonked" in G/R's direction, G/R preoccupied with a couple or two. They spend their feeding time at the cat-tail thicket at O13, but range to the island. Saw G/R billing with the UNM bird at J10. - At 2:30 p.m. a boat from the fisheries class came down the lake, sending one coot
