Fulica americana 303 Apr 12 Lake Temescal, 420 ft., Alameda Co., Calif. - a pair of Mallards out from Q 27, the Coct chased the O first, then returned to get the O. 18 of the 20 eggs in nest T6.5 are now gone, #1,5,4,6,3,8,7, are the ones remaining; #2 is missing. The nest has a lining of dead willow leaves, also some dead and green grass on the ramp. Both birds are close by, in the cat-tails, churning, but only the O is growling. The structure at H 7.25 is apparently a display or copulatory platform; another structure, more concealed and nest like, is started at T6.1. It is composed entirely of dead cat-tail material, short pieces, on the base of th a large pushed over clump of cat-tails. - Aquatic Park, Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif. 3 coots left at 5 end. All with SS shields. 4 in the refuge area, shields not fully swollen, couldn't be sure but probably SS. Apr 14 - same Lake Temescal, 420 ft., Alameda Co., Calif. The nest at Q 22.13 is well built up, both birds nearly, both in charge position as they quietly swim round in the vicinity. The display platform at Q 23.13 seems to be completely defunct.
