V. GULLION 1950 Fulica americana 29 For 9 Lake Temescal, 42 ft., Alameda Co., Calif. The nest at P/6.2 is built up with dead material laid upon the green stuff used for a base. The dead material had to be brought in since there is very little there, the area having been burned. No eggs in this nest. Although this nest was very exposed when started, the growth of green leaves has pretty well concealed it. The nest at Q22.13 is so well concealed that I am not going to be able to check it, especially since it can't be waded to. A chase, one of the E birds, the ♂?, attached two birds at K/7 and drove them to I/17 where paired display ensued. 2 to 1. When the E bird returned and the other pair moved down into their W territory. I threw out some bread at M/15 and they came across the lake after it. There was some pantering with SE ♂ at the line between M9+10, but the W birds held their own. Once the W ♂ attacked W♀E at M/12 and chased it to K/13. Apparently the W pair and the M pair are the same. See next page for apparent territories today. Now W♂ is chasing UNM out the same place he just chased U/E. This UNM apparently was E♀.
