GULLION 1950 Fulica americana 286 Apr 8 Lake Merritt, e.l., Oakland Alameda Co., Calif. - I would estimate not over 300 birds Costs on the lake today. Aquatic Park, Berkeley, Alameda C. Calif.- 4 birds at 5 end, 6 in the refuge area. - a total of 10 birds on the lake. - returning to Lake Merritt a moment- Lots of fighting and chasing was observed today. The majority of the birds seemed to be in an aggressive mood. Apr 9 Lake Temescal, 420 ft., Alameda Co., Calif.- About 8 a.m. SE♀ was on the nest, as I came in, she got off and churned. Took 2 or 3 pictures of her and 1 of her mate, all in partial display. There was quite a bit of chasing going on in the cat-tails in the SW area. - Feeding birds at P30, got photographs of several birds, ♂ & ♀ and of a charge. When the E♀ came up one of the males N? kept challenging her, chasing etc, but she just kept out of his way, occasionally cackling, and charging him everytime his back was turned. Finally the E♂ came up to P28 to support his mate and the other ♂ left. Shortly afterward E♀ returned to the cat-tails at S23 where she preened for a couple of minutes. While she was standing there, E♂ came swimming around.
