Fulica americana 282 Apr 8 Lake Tamescal, 420ft, Alameda Co., Calif.- Meantime SE ♀ came out to attack W130 who had returned to K 8.♀ and 6NM feeding unmoleted at HI 2 - W130 was doing the same at K 2 until a SE bird came down and chased it on land. Now as W130 wanders around uncertainly on land the SE rests in the water nearby, watched the E pair copulate at ♀ 23.13. Both were swimming at ♀ 24 - the female giving a "poonk" and the male a "punkle", the♀event up onto the cat-tails first, followed closely by the♂. As she crossed the platform she remained silent, but arched and then slapped the platform with her foot. Still arched she settled down on the platform, with her head under water! The male mounted her and starting giving a closely spaced "kunkle, kunkle, kunkle" he did not take hold of her, but gently mounted square on his her back, his head lowered and using his wings for balance. She by now raised her head out of the water, he reared back apparently hanging onto her back with his claws, as copulation took place. The extramission took no longer than 5 seconds, he dismounted and swan off while she stood up and preened for several minutes before leaving. He went towards P16.
