V. GULLION 1950 Fulica americana 276 Apr. 5 Univ. Calif. Campus, Alameda Co., Calif. only birds not being persistently chased. Twice V/B and once V/G came over to attack the birds in the cage. O displayed opposite V/G once, but V/G did not reciprocate. Very noisy. Lots of "pukko" from V/G and V/B2e and "punk-mink"from W3. V/G2e just attacked and thoroughly cleared up on B-r in the water, having B-r under water for a moment. V/G and W3 came in side by side to participate. I think V/G2e is losing out to V/B so far as W3 is concerned The red billed bird is being ignored in these territory disputes but V/B and V/G are chasing all other birds. P/0 is showing some "nesting" interest in a clump of grass like things growing at the E end of its area. Now W3 and V/G are in the pool together chasing any other bird that dares enter. V/G2e shows interest in W3 but everytime O he tries to get to her V/B cuts him off. Now V/G and O are pecking at one another thru the wire. Now W3 and ?/Be are doing the same. O is carrying a piece of material around the cage. V/B chases O/B-r right by P/0 without showing any antagonism for the latter. These birds are going today despite people in the courtyard or looking out of windows. They are rather unconcerned
