FULLER AMERICANA 257 Mar 31 Lake Temescal, 4:20ff, Alameda Co., Calif - area towards the north. Near the S & consistently giving a "Coo-ah","coo-ah" note after a battle. Also a nervous "Pyhk-cowah" from several males. The trouble seems to lie in the W pair and probably the W pair trying to find good nesting sites at the S end of the lake. Also some of the flock may be trying something of the sort, since some of the tagged birds (3 of them) have been seen to display a couple of times. Now 5:40, things are quite for the first time since I arrived. But trouble is starting - one bird at - I can't keep track of all this - see maps 1-2-3 next pages - On nest J6.5 [illegible] 8 eggs and incubation is well under way - both birds were near, the & most concerned - while I was still in the area she took time out to chase a bird from L10 to I11.- The & at L8 crowed, and she returned to one first, no right behind. For 1 some locality 10:49 a.m. & just charged W18, chasing it from X10 to J13. Some chasing is going on in the area X-M 15+11. The E pair were just copulating, at S23.13. They were out of the water, standing on a mass of floating cat-tails. Couldn't see many details from where I am.
