Fulica americana 245 Mar 25 Jewel Lake 510 ft, Contra Costa Co., Calif. yet. Nest photographed in B&W and color to show concealment. Since the water has gone down some, this nest is much higher out of the water than it was. It has a very deep cup and is generally a large, pulky nest. A 5th bird is on the lake today, just now 10:05 a.m., it was chased out of the area, flew to G/16 where it alighted. As I work up and down this W side S of the boat, the S pair go in attendance, doing a lot of billing etc, but giving no leads as to the whereabouts of their nest. Buts of the N pair seem to be invading the territory, there is no 5th bird here today, so think, but rather just an after chased N♀. Just now 10:35 a.m., The N♂ was chased out to about F/8. The chasing S bird went into the cat-tails at C/13 - a moment later, M coming down from the N end, penetrated to F/11 before the S pair came out & leading to chase him back to F/18, M did not display, but the S♂ did - the S♀ did not participate in the chase but did follow it - # she gave encouragement in the form of her usual "purrunk". After the chase M went to E/26, N♀ remained near F/18, & the S pair returned to C/12 to feed. I have really gone over the area from H/18 to F-H/9 and can see no nest
