Fulica americana 243 IV. GULLION 1950 Mar 24 Jewel lake, 510 ft., Contra Costa Co., Calif.- made no display. The chased bird then cut over to E 26 to feed on some cat-tail leaves uprooted by the N pair. The S bird returned S and soon the chased bird (with a swollen shield) drifted off S again. M has just spent the last couple of minutes at about < 22.18 busily "punking" at his mate who was over behind the boat. The nest at P 25.7 has six eggs in it, all cold. Eggs 5 & 6 marked. Incubation apparently has not begun yet. This nest is floating so the 6-8 inch rise in water level of the lake from the past heavy rain did not damage, or even exchange to nests. Now 5:15 p.m. N♀ is charging another bird (S ♂?) from the island to F 25 then S. M started to charge out from the island, went as far as G-9, turned off to go down towards H 15. When S ♀ was last seen she was chasing the other bird S at about D 23. Am not sure that this chased bird is not one of the S pair. I don't know. While I was in close to nest P 25.7 the parent birds showed no interest, but stayed out on the open water near the boat and island.
