Fulica americana 241 Feb 24 Aquatic Park, s.e. Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif. 17 coots in refuge area, shield conditions not determined. 7 in the reef area. These all had small shields, and with the exception of the first bird seen, I believe that all of the remaining birds have either flat or nearly flat shields. 2 birds seen together at S end of ref area, both with swollen frontal shields. Probably paired birds. 23 at pool at S end, 22 of them in one flock at east end of this swimming pool. 1 of there 22 had a swollen shield, about the size of 9BL (p. 240), the rest had either slightly swollen or flat, but few really flat, maybe 4 or 5, surely no more. The majority of large shield birds seem to have departed since I was here last time. -Lake Merritt, Oakland, Alameda Co., Calif.- A coot, seen on Feb 3, and number read then, found dead on the island several days ago, and band recovered # 40-600861. This bird will be worked over in detail tomorrow. 5/2 and 496-7/16/10 also seen in fenced area. 6/10 had a quite enlarged shield, up from the flat class of some time ago. A great majority of the birds here have swollen shields, a few have less swollen shields, but none seen with truly flat shields. The rains came so I moved on to Temescal. Another pinned bird seen to E of fenced area, probably 648.
