FULICA AMERICANA 239 Mar 22 Lake Temescal, 420 ft., Alameda Co., Calif. egg nest. (ill see dates) -> Jewel Lake, 510 ft., Contra Costa Co., Calif. A nest with 4 eggs found at F 25.7. Eggs cool, marked 1, 2, 3, 4. Nest big bulky, composed almost entirely of deal cat tails - or I should say, completely composed of deal cat tails. While this nest is not close to the open part of the lake, the beaten up nature of the cat-tails puts it in a fairly open position, so it is close to open water. The same faces the open water to the NE. It has a very deep cup. There seems to be only 4 birds on the lake today, plus two geese and a pair of Golden- eyes. Could find no nest in the area I 18 south to I 6, or from c 6, thru to A 17. But the S pair watched me closely all the way around, showed most concern when I was near H 14. I did not get out to the point at F 9. Several times the S pair were billing, but the N pair were not close together. One N bird was near 6-17, the other at the corner N of the island. Mar 24 Aquatic Park, Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif. 1 coot seen near boathouse, slightly swollen shield. 3 coots in area immediately north of refuge area. Shield conditions not determined.
