Tadria americana 277 Mar 10 Aquatic Park, s.l., Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif. No coots in KRE pool. 48 in swimming area at Sand. Gregarious, little chasing or displaying, mostly feeding. 1 pair were at the opposite end of the pool (West) from the 40 birds. No tags. At least 2 of the 40 birds have enlarged frontal shields, none really big, but growing. They are feeding on some green substance they are obtaining by diving. Birds bringing food up are subject to some chase, but not much of it. They seem to be getting an abundance of food. 26 coots in "reef" area. Mostly feeding among the gulls on the reef or on grass on the shore along the road. 2 between reef and refuge. 17 in refuge area along with many scaps, a couple of golden-eyes, e horned grebe, 8 jibtails + & pair of baldpates. No tagged or pinned birds seen on this pond. Mar 12 Lake Merritt, s.l., Oakland, Alameda Co., Calif. Many coots on the lake today, many with greatly enlarged shields seen. Also two pinned birds seen. Mar 13 Univ Calif Campus, Alameda Co., Calif. [illegible] on nest this morning. Doesn't seem interested in leaving it. W close by but not showing much interest. After going over to feed for a moment, [illegible] came back to nest, pulled a cat-tail leaf in from the edge, then sat down in the nest, more or less facing
