Fulica americana 226 Nov 10 Lake Temescal, 4:30 ft., Alameda Blvd., Calif. with branches drooping to the water, has a browse line about 15 or 16 inches above the water surface. I have noticed very heavy feeding on Carex leaves, particular in this area, and there seems to be a great deal of feeding upon cat-tail shoots. The cat-tails at Q 23 are densely interspersed with green shoots nipped off at the base. Some of this may be used later for nesting. I don't know, but now it is widely scattered and not in any organized form. Seen, w/ll seen. Caught a piece of bread away from another cost. One of a pair that got the bread originally. The other was in hot pursuit, he dropped it to eat some of it, chasing her from it, but when other costs came in, he turned and fought them off, letting her feed. After a couple 2 minutes I got in grabbed it and ran. Noticed another bird feeding on weeping willows at Q 28 - The Carex and grass along the shore from Q 28 to 034 is badly eaten down, hardly any Carex or grass growing. The dock (Indian tobacco), clover, plantain, lupine (or something legume), native willows, are not touched. A wetch was badly eaten upon. Mint not touched, nor are several Compositae
