No coots are grazing on the N side of the lake where the algae bloom is so heavy but on the S side, where there is not algae, coots are grazing on the grass, with the baldpates. The Baldpates are grazing alone on the N side. Lake Temescal, 420 ft., Alameda Co., Calif. 7 birds in a flock feeding at LM 9-10. Among these birds are & R, w/B and UNM (B&W?). They are attacked by a bird with a very large shield every time they go S of M/10.11. The attacker even goes on land after them, this it is tolerating 2?2+1♂ mallard in the strait. The mate?, also with a large shield is preening on the island. The shield on & is flat, the shield on w/B is F or SS but not S, the shield on R is F, UNM is F. The attacking bird gives a “tack-tack, tack-tack, tack-tack” as it comes across to chase the flock. One bird in this flock has a swollen S shield. Two more birds w/o large shields were seen at N-P 26-27. Birds with large shields at O 34 (may be from E end of Dam since people are on the beach there), at O 14 at L 8-9, at F 10 and F 8 or 9. 3 birds charged from F 9-10 to K 10, then one bird splattered after another from
