Fulica americana 195 Feb 3 Lake Temescal 420 ft., Alameda Co., Calif. frontal shield. No other bird has been observed yet today having this. R with 12 birds, including & w/BE and the lost tagbird at D 35, swimming N to be met by the pair defending the Dam area. All of these tagged birds have lost the swollen character of their frontal shields since having been put on this lake. Most of as all of their front shields now look flat or perhaps slightly swollen. Lake Merritt, Oakland, Alameda Co., Calif. Bird 496-716 48 - released at Suisun City, Solano Co., Calif. December 11, 1949, was seen in the fenced area today. It has lost both tags, but the copper wires and pin are still in place. 496-71610- from Lake Temescal is in the fenced area. Watching it, I saw it pick up pigeon and gull feces. 496/7162 also from Lake Temescal is in the fenced area. A very old looking bird with reddish yellow legs, a very roundly swollen frontal shield carried a band, probably size 7, on which the numbers 600861 could be distinguished. No series number was seen although that part of the band could be clearly seen and did not seem unusually worn. & from Lake Temescal, seen on the water on its west edge of the refuge. Feb 4 Lewis Calif. Campus, Alameda Co., Calif. a dead crayfish thrown into the coot area several days ago still.
