Jan 25 Univ. Calif. Campus, Alameda Co., Calif.
-found and put on with double copper
wire. G/B-sexed ♀, estrogen tab placed
under skin behind incision. Wound dusted with
sulfanilamide. Weight-464 grams. C-
weight-548 grams, sexed ♂, testosterone
pellet put under skin. Punctured air
sac going in-testes small, hidden
under large intestine had a little trouble
finding it, probably about 4 mm long,
and at least 2mm in diameter. Used
sulfanilamide on wound. YLB-weighs
497 grams-sexed ♂, no trouble, but
like the last ♂, testes was fairly
small and hard to locate. Powdered
insides with sulfanilamide and
placed 2 small pellets of testosterone
under skin to rear of incision.
No fat on any of these three
birds. X/P seems to have left the area,
it had the unclipped wings. Cw-weighs
382 grams, sexed-estrogen under skin.
Jan 26 Gray Lodge Refuge, 800 ft. Butte Co., Calif.
watching birds this afternoon, ample
evidence of an early stage of territory
behavior. No violent encounters noted
but 15 or more pairs were on territory,
threatening their neighbors some, but
apparently not actually attacking them.
Many of the birds are sitting on the
water in charging position, or with
their tails spread, or both. A great
deal of "puffing" heard, also a few
"ponks". But the "punk's" must be
