Fulica americana -13- Apr 27 Jewel Lake, Tilden Park, Contra Costa Co., Calif.- nest and gave the "puhk" note. When I left the cat-tails the smaller bird was feeding new. B-10.22 and later was moving from F-9 toward the upper end. I bird crowing with a "pulk-krost, pulk-krost, pulk-krost" note at G-11.3. 11:30 a.m., the bird then swam along northward. See journal p.72 for cost chasing & malled — At about 2 pm I visited nest O-26.10 again— the fifth downy young was out of the nest and two more eggs were pipped . At 2:15 p.m. I returned and took a kodachrome of the nest & pipped eggs. - At 3:50 where I returned to nest O26.6 one of the swimming young was back in the nest. It quickly popped out as I came into view. Still just 2 eggs pipped and two yet unmarked. Eggs were so warm that I believe they are still being incubated. The "puhk" bird was on the scene, defending as usual while the other bird was in the cat-tails to the S of the nest as usual. Apr 28 same locality - at 9:15 a.m. a bird was low on the nest at C-12.13.- Visited nest O26.6 at 9:35 a.m. One downy young gment over the side and swam away as I approached. Eggs 3+6 pipped, egg 1 still unmarked. The usual parent was guarding the nest, no indication as to the where abouts of the other parent or brood. Now at 9:38 I hear a "chuck chuck" from near N26.5, then all is quiet. At 9:40 I started leaving
